It’s a new day for Montreal.

On Sunday, the city voted decisively for change, electing its second female mayor — and the first of Latin American heritage — Ensemble Montréal Leader Soraya Martinez Ferrada.

Her victory is clear. As things stand, not only did she defeat Projet Montréal’s Luc Rabouin by around eight points, her party also won a majority of city council seats, giving her the latitude she needs to deliver results for the next four years.

For the three-quarters of Montrealers who wanted change at city hall, Ensemble Montréal’s win is reason to celebrate. But did they truly vote for Martinez Ferrada and her team — or against another four years of Projet Montréal, a party that was showing fatigue after two terms in power?
