APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — After being diagnosed with breast cancer at just 27, a local woman is now turning her attention toward helping others battling the disease, and she's doing it in honor of her mom.
Kaitlyn Turner and a group of volunteers recently spent a morning filling dozens of boxes with everything from mastectomy pillows to button-down shirts, to blankets. The care packages are sent to breast cancer patients; the assortment of items in each box is carefully chosen based on whether a patient is going through chemotherapy, surgery or radiation.
The items are selected by breast cancer survivors, who know what type of items can make a difficult and painful process a little bit more comfortable.
"It's my way of turning something bad into something good," Kaitlyn explained.
