A report from the National Weather Service was issued on Monday at 8:57 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 9:45 p.m. for Yates, Seneca, Cayuga, Schuyler and Tompkins counties.
The storms are foreseen to bring pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) and wind gusts of up to 50 mph.
"At 8:56 p.m., Doppler radar tracked strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Aurora to Middlesex. Movement was southeast at 30 mph," explains the weather service. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible."
Locations impacted by the alert include Penn Yan, Hector, Romulus, Cayuga Heights, Starkey, Lansing, Benton, Covert, Genoa and Dryden.
The weather service comments, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building."
