SPRINGFIELD – City officials are organizing to help residents left hungry by the freezing of food assistance. At the same time, they vented anger toward federal politicians, saying they are putting the most vulnerable at risk while playing politics.

All city departments are joining with the Hampden Sheriff’s Department, local churches and others to collect food and cash donations to help people struggling to feed their families after Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits were cut off Saturday.
