BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Construction on a critical Chittenden County bridge isn't expected to begin until at least 2027, but some lane closures are taking place this week as crews perform work for environmental studies.
Workers are taking soil samples as part of early site and environmental testing as they look to eventually replace the nearly 100-year-old structure.
Officials say that the bridge across the Winooski River no longer meets modern safety or transportation needs.
According to Burlington's Department of Public Works, lane closures will occur through Wednesday on the Burlington-Winooski Bridge and one block of Colchester Avenue, as far uphill as Barrett Street.
The closures are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Street parking will also be limited in the area
