SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WATE) — A funeral service was held Monday to honor Knoxville Police Lieutenant Gordan Gwathney. He died October 26 after drowning on a hunting trip in North Dakota. He was 57.
Family, friends, law enforcement and community members gathered at Seymour First Baptist Church for the service. Gwathney went by many names. He was know as "Ted" to his family, "Gordo" to his friends, and "Officer G" to the community he served. He spent most of his 28 year career with KPD patrolling in East Knoxville.
Officer Adam Willson spoke about Gwathney's impact on someone they call Gwathney's "bonus son."
"You showed the kid love from the start, and mentored him since he was 14," Willson said. "That kid, Matt Sims, in three weeks, graduates from the academy to be a Georgia State Trooper."
