A new study authorized by the Indiana Gaming Commission identified downtown Indianapolis and a DeKalb County site as the top two locations for a potential casino. The findings, presented Wednesday to the State Budget Committee, ignore the risks to families, schools and public safety, said state Sen. Dr. Tyler Johnson.
“We needed an independent, comprehensive review of social, traffic and infrastructure costs before any informed decision could possibly be made,” the Leo-Cedarville lawmaker said Wednesday. “Understanding things the way I do now, I oppose this attempt to relocate a casino in my community.”
Johnson’s concerns are valid. A June 2005 study by the University of Buffalo found that having a casino within a 10-mile radius increases the odds of problem gambling by 90%. According to
