A new canine unit capable of detecting hidden data-storage devices will soon begin working with the Halton police internet child exploitation unit (ICE).
The Halton Police Board voted during its Oct. 30 meeting to acquire the dog through Jordan Detection K9 in Indianapolis.
Deputy Chief Jeff Hill said the cost to the police service will be minimal as the non-profit organization Operation Underground Railroad has agreed to pay for the dog’s purchase and training.
“The dog is trained to smell specific compounds that are in USB sticks. When you go to some of these houses and you are looking for a USB stick or other device with exploitation material on it, it can be like looking for a needle in a haystack,” said Hill.
