Research reveals how more than three quarters of shop staff have experienced intimidating behaviour in the past year, with almost half saying they felt the abuse had got worse in the last two years

Shop workers have described being spat at, punched and left suffering panic attacks after escalating levels of abuse by customers. Others revealed how they are regularly shouted at or left in tears because of the treatment suffered.

The litany of abuse was detailed by the Retail Trust charity as it urged people to show workers respect, starting with simple gestures like a hello, thank you or a smile whilst out shopping in the run up to Christmas .
