CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- University of Illinois residence halls Taft and Van Doren are set to be demolished and replaced with larger -- and more accessible -- facilities.
University Housing Associate Director of Communications and Marketing Chris Axtman-Barker said the U of I does not have a set timeline on when demolition will take place. But, he added that the new residence hall, currently referred to as “Residence Hall #4,” is expected to have between 600 to 800 beds with a 300 seat dining hall.
Currently, the two halls hold around 400 people.
Axtman-Barker said Taft and Van Doren Halls are among the older halls on the Champaign side of campus. According to the U of I, Taft and Van Doren Halls were added to the Fourth Street Residence Halls complex in the 1950s.
