URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) -- Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams took to social media on Tuesday to discuss federal immigration activity in Urbana.
WCIA spoke with him. He said the city is committed to embodying its status as a sanctuary city.
“We didn't expect for it to trickle down to us, but here we are,” Williams said.
He confirmed with WCIA that federal agencies are coming to the community to deal with matters of immigration. But, Williams made it clear the city and the Urbana Police Department were not involved in any matters of immigration.
“We wanted to make it known that federal agents have been active inside and outside the city's limits,” Williams said.
Despite the State of Illinois' Trust Act and Urbana's status as a sanctuary city legally limiting their role in immigration enforcemen
