The second of three lab monkeys that escaped a crash on Interstate 59 in Mississippi last week was shot and killed Monday evening, Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson confirmed Tuesday afternoon. One monkey remains on the loose, Johnson said.
The latest monkey to meet a bloody fate made it nearly a week on its own in the great wide open but didn't make it far. Johnson said the monkey was found just off Country Road 39 near its intersection with I-59, about a mile from where a transport truck carrying 21 rhesus macaques from Tulane University's National Biomedical Research Center hit a median and flipped on Oct. 28, ejecting eight of the animals from their cages.
