AIKEN COUNTY (WRDW/WAGT) - Workers approaching a month without paychecks are turning to blessing boxes across the CSRA as bills come due at the start of the new month.

Blessing boxes, located around the CSRA, are like community food pantries, which allow people to take what they need without question. They have seen increased demand since the government shutdown began. More than 100 boxes operate throughout the CSRA.

Arie Murphy, executive director of Aiken County Habitat for Humanity, said the need is immediate and constant.

“I get to work around 7:30, 8 o’clock. The door was wide open. The box was empty. I went in and got items and put them in. Twenty minutes later, one of my staff members came out. They’re like, the box is already empty,” Murphy said.
