AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Voters in both Richmond and Columbia counties on Tuesday approved local homestead exemptions.

Richmond County

In Richmond County, the measure passed by 17,409 (76.8%) votes to 5,245 (23.2%).

The floating exemption was put forth by Augusta leaders after they decided to opt out of the state’s floating homestead exemption.

A floating exemption caps the amount of tax increases, often tied to some economic gauge.

The exemption will limit increases to a little over 3% a year.
