AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The James Brown Family Foundation is preparing for what could be its largest turkey giveaway yet as economic pressures from SNAP cuts and federal employee furloughs create increased demand for food assistance.

The Godfather of Soul’s impact remains visible throughout Augusta on street signs, buildings downtown and in the Augusta Museum. But for his daughter, Deanna Brown Thomas, his legacy extends far beyond fame.

“This was one of his favorite days of the year, giving away turkeys to the people,” said Brown Thomas, founder and president of the James Brown Family Foundation. “These are people he literally grew up with in the area. And he would see them.”
