Democrat Elaine Denton defeated incumbent Onondaga County Legislator Mark Olson with 55% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial election results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

Denton led 4,272-3,425. Another 259 absentee ballots are outstanding.

Denton, 40, is a community activist, a graphic designer and former town board member in Manlius. She grew up on a dairy farm near Utica, which her family has owned for eight generations.

Denton said she ran for change.

“We want to make sure the county is taking care of its residents and really making sure that our taxpayer dollars are going where they’re needed,” she said when she declared victory at Harvey’s Garden.
