EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon men’s basketball opened its season with a narrow 60-59 win over Hawaii on Tuesday night, a result that felt more like a sigh of relief than a statement.
The Ducks entered the night looking to set the tone for the new season but instead found themselves battling through turnovers, missed opportunities, and a late collapse that nearly cost them the game. Oregon committed 21 turnovers and repeatedly struggled to find consistency in transition which ultimately allowed Hawaii to erase a double-digit second-half deficit.
For much of the game, Oregon’s offense lacked flow and direction, an issue compounded by the absence of sophomore point guard Jackson Shelstad. Without him, the Ducks’ ball movement and pace suffered, especially against Hawaii’s defensive pressure.
