BRISTOL, Conn. (WFSB) - Democratic candidates won mayoral races in multiple towns during local elections, with several municipalities switching from Republican to Democratic leadership.
Ellen Zappo Sassu won the Bristol mayoral race, defeating Republican incumbent Jeff Caggiano. Zappo Sassu previously served as mayor before leaving office in 2021 to become town manager.
Towns that elected Democratic mayors include Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Norwich, New Britain, and Farmington.
New Britain elected its first Democratic mayoral candidate in 12 years.
Sen. Chris Murphy called the results significant in a statement.
“The shift in Connecticut tonight is seismic. Possibly unprecedented,” Murphy said.
