GOSHEN – Republicans have retained the majority in the Orange County Legislature; however, Democrats gained a few seats.

In 2025, Republicans held 15 seats with five Democrats and one Conservative.

In Tuesday’s elections, veteran Republican Legislator Leigh Benton fell behind Democratic challenger Stephen Hunter Jr. by two votes. Hunter received 1,953 to Benton’s 1,951.

There were also two write-in votes in that 16 th District.

A recount and any possible absentee ballots will likely decide that race.

Benton is currently serving as the legislature’s Republican majority leader.
