In the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 31, members of the fire department responded to an alarm at the First Congregational church. Though things looked normal from the outside, upon entering they were met with heavy smoke from a fire in the kitchen. The firefighters were able to knock it down fairly quickly, containing the fire damage to the kitchen area.
According to Roger Dubord, chairman of the buildings and grounds committee, the fire marshal believes the fire started between 3 and and 3:30 a.m., likely originating in the dishwasher. Neighbors offered that there was a power surge at about that time but it is not known if that was a contributing factor.
