OMAHA, Neb. —
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is mourning a beloved member of their giraffe herd.
Officials said Zola was humanely euthanized Tuesday after facing chronic gastrointestinal issues.
"Her quality of life had declined despite extensive care and treatment efforts," the zoo said on social media , which led to the "difficult but compassionate decision."
In March 2023, Zola added a giraffe calf, Hope , to the herd.
"Zola touched the lives of both our care teams and guests. She was known for her gentle nature and eagerness to participate in her own care, including transabdominal ultrasounds to help monitor the fetal development of her calf, Hope. Zola’s frequent interactions at Giraffe Encounter made her a favorite among guests," the zoo said on social media.
