LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At least nine people are dead and several people are injured after a UPS cargo plane crashed near Louisville’s international airport on Tuesday.
The MD-11 aircraft was enroute to Honolulu went down around 5:15 p.m., sending a massive plume of smoke into the sky visible across Louisville and southern Indiana.
In an update Wednesday morning, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed the nine fatalities. However, he said that number is likely to grow.
Gov. Andy Beshear called the incident “catastrophic” and urged residents to stay away from the area as emergency crews continue to respond.
The search for more victims resumed at daybreak Wednesday. So far, 16 families reported missing family members, according to Beshear.
