LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
A UPS cargo plane crashed and exploded Tuesday while taking off from an airport in Louisville, Kentucky, killing at least 9 people, the state's governor said.
Aviation expert and former Massport CEO Tom Kinton says the UPS cargo plane, an MD-11 made by McDonnell Douglas, was probably going 160 knots or about 175 miles an hour when it came down and just broke apart in an industrial park.
The fact that it was loaded with fuel amplified the fiery crash.
“Obviously something catastrophic occurred with that left engine, while the aircraft was taking off and unfortunately, I think it happened when the pilots were at the point of no return, you can't stop the aircraft and stay on the runway, you're going too fast, so you have to fly the aircraft,” Kinton said. “You have 280,
