KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers has been indicted on federal charges.

Childers has been charged with violating the civil rights of people in custody, as well as making a false statement.

"This news is profoundly troubling and casts a shadow over the integrity of law enforcement," the Ray County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook Wednesday.

"It discredits the many honorable officers who serve their communities with dedication, fairness and respect for the rule of law."

The sheriff's office asked the community to respect the privacy of Childers' family.

"They are not responsible for the actions that led to the indictment," the sheriff's office said.

Childers officially resigned as sheriff for Ray County in August 2024. He took over the sheriff's seat in 2020
