KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A memorial honoring two people shot and killed by a Kansas City police officer was destroyed after being set on fire—just days after the victims' sister spoke publicly about the case.
The memorial stood for more than two years near 31st and Van Brunt in east Kansas City. It honored 47-year-old Marcell Nelson and another woman, both of whom were shot and killed by Officer Blayne Newton in June 2023.
Nelson's nephew was also shot in the head but survived.
"This has been here; it hasn't been touched…for two years. From June 17 of 2023, it hasn't been touched by anybody," Nelson's sister, Eboney Allmon, told FOX4.
Allmon said she has visited the memorial regularly since it was first created.
"We had been coming down here every other week – if not every week," she said.
