There’s unwelcome news just as the winter heating season gets underway.

Thousands of gas customers in the state might be seeing their bills increase.

On Wednesday, state regulators gave the OK for Yankee Gas to charge more to provide its service.

“How are people supposed to afford anything today? It’s nuts,” Stacey White, of Waterbury, said.

Customers of Yankee Gas found out their average bill might soon rise on average by $15 a month, according to regulators.

The utility provides gas to about a quarter-million customers across 85 communities in the state.
