For sale: Several 2-ton pieces of Michigan transportation history.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority is selling sections of steel grating that had been part of the bridge since it was constructed in the 1950s.

The 38-foot-long sections are up for bid through noon on Nov. 17 at GovDeals.com , an online auction marketplace for government surplus items. As of Wednesday afternoon, high bids ranged from $775 to $405.

Matthew Makarewicz, assistant bridge engineer for the authority, said the agency has been replacing about 20 panels of the original grating each year since the late '90s. The sections initially were sold for scrap value but, after several parties expressed interest, the authority began auctioning them off online.
