GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Green Bay city leaders joined local organizations on Wednesday in an effort to highlight a worrying trend: food insecurity.
Recent data shows one in four people in Brown County lack consistent access to nutritious food.
That number has been rising over the past few months.
Many pantries have seen demand for their services skyrocket by 30% to 40%, with some serving triple the number of families compared to previous years.
The lapse in SNAP benefits is contributing to an already uncertain future for recipients, who are now only expected to get half of what they were given just a month ago.
Mayor Eric Genrich is now calling on the community to donate whatever they can to help pantries meet that growing need.
