Cardinal Robert McElroy, who led the Catholic Diocese of San Diego for a decade, is set to undergo surgery after he was diagnosed with cancer, the Archdiocese of Washington announced Wednesday.

McElroy — who now serves as the archbishop of Washington — was diagnosed with well-differentiated liposarcoma, a "non-aggressive cancer," according to a statement from the archdiocese.

He will undergo surgery next Thursday, and his prognosis is said to be "very good."

The cardinal says he plans to resume his full duties by the end of this month.
