DES MOINES, Iowa ( WOI ) - Des Moines Refugee Support says the majority of its 200 refugee families are being kicked off of SNAP, WOI reports .
It’s part of President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, which came as a complete surprise to Des Moines Refugee Support leaders.
The group discovered the change when one of its Afghan families applied to have their benefits renewed and was told they no longer qualify.
“It just seems like cruelty is the point, and that just breaks my heart,” Des Moines Refugee Support board member Erin Bell said. “But more than that, it makes me angry.”
The new bill requires refugees and other immigrants to have a green card to receive SNAP benefits. But the process to get approved can take months, or in some cases years.
