WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes-Barre City Fire Chief Jay Delaney is crediting working smoke alarms that alerted two people to a blaze at a double block residence on Chandler Street early Thursday morning.

Delaney said city firefighters responded to 8-10 Chandler St. in Miners Mills at 2:45 a.m. finding heavy flames coming from the building.

Two residents along with a dog and cat escaped due to being awakened by smoke alarms, Delaney said.

“There was an enormous amount of fire when firefighters arrived and it quickly went to a second and then a third alarm,” Delaney said.

Plains Township firefighters and the Kingston/Forty Fort Fire Department assisted at the scene.

During the attack, Delaney said firefighters were pulled from the interior due to the volume of flames and went into an exterior,
