SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) - A man was arrested early Thursday in Salem after a report of shots fired led to a standoff with police.
Salem Police say officers arrived about 5:45 a.m. to the 100 block of Wortham Street, in the eastern part of the city, and found a man who had a handgun with him. Police say Lazarus Powell, 22, of Salem, refused to leave the residence and retreated inside.
Negotiators with Salem’s Emergency Response Team began communicating with Powell, according to police, and after several “prolonged attempts encouraging him to exit the house peacefully,” Powell surrendered and was taken into custody.
Police say no one was hurt during the incident.
Powell was arrested and charged with reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He is being held i
