LONGWOOD, The Bronx (PIX11) — Seven firefighters are still recovering after a car explosion and raging fire in Longwood on Wednesday.

Investigators are no longer searching for an arson suspect as the FDNY initially believed, sources tell PIX11 News. New surveillance footage obtained by PIX11 News shows what investigators see as the careless disposal of smoking material.

The footage shows a man flicking what appears to be a cigarette or cigar into a pile of trash. Seconds later, the man is seen trying to put out the small fire, but is unsuccessful.

Minutes later, flames took over the same pile of trash and spread to a parked car, then to a van. The flames, fueled by heavy wind on Wednesday, turned into a massive explosion that lit up the Bronx sky.
