BEAUFORT — It was a quiet Halloween in Pigeon Point, a sleepy neighborhood minutes from downtown set beside a baseball field and a veteran’s cemetery.
One woman prepared to hand out full-sized candy bars for any trick-or-treaters who might approach her door. But no one came.
She turned off the lights, flipped on the television and laid in bed.
Then she heard gunfire.
Through the slats in her window, she saw children running.
“The people across the street are shooting guns, and arguing,” a woman staying at a vacation rental told a 911 operator at 8:25 p.m.
The caller estimated that she heard seven shots.
