Heat deaths in Southern Nevada this year are nearing 300, Clark County reported this week, and it's still possible the count could rise further.

Officials reported Monday that they have investigated 279 deaths so far where heat was a factor. This number could increase, as determining the cause and manner of death takes up to 90 days in 90% of cases, officials said.

Those who died ranged in age from 18 to 91, the report showed.

In the last update on Oct. 13, the county had counted 260 deaths related to heat.

People can be more susceptible to dying of heat if they use certain drugs or have an illness or medical condition such as cardiovascular disease. Officials added that other behaviors — like exercising, wearing inappropriate clothing for the heat, not drinking enough water and not ac
