FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — After 17 years at the helm of Arkansas men’s track and field, head coach Chris Bucknam is stepping away. The longtime Razorback leader leaves behind a legacy of championships, mentorship, and pride in the program that he says will always feel like home.
Bucknam took over in 2008 following the retirement of legendary coach John McDonnell. Since then, he’s led the Razorbacks to 34 SEC titles and two national championships, continuing the standard of excellence that defined Arkansas track and field for decades.
He says that his decision to retire comes down to family. “I’ve been a head coach since I was 27 years old,” Bucknam says. “It’s time to let the younger guys get it done, and I need to use that energy for family, to see family and reconnect that way as well.”
