A battle over redistricting is playing out in legislatures and ballot boxes across the country as both parties try to give themselves an electoral advantage in next year’s midterm elections. But how did we get here? Spectrum News Washington Correspondent Cassie Semyon explains the history of partisan gerrymandering in the U.S.

In August, California Governor Gavin Newsom, stood before a crowd holding signs that read “Defend Democracy,” and declared “We’re giving the power to the people. This will be th first redistricting that’s ever done that.”

Across the country, in North Carolina, the State Republican Leader, Brenden Jones addressed the state legislature in October saying, “You can be mad about redistricting all you want to, but you need to look in the mirror and see what got us here.”
