NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) -- A student at Fort Dorchester High School was detained Friday morning after authorities said he claimed to have brought a firearm to campus, according to police.

The North Charleston Police Department said a staff member told the school's security resource officer that a student had told another student he was carrying a gun.

The officer responded to the cafeteria, where the student was identified.

"When asked to remove his hands from his hoodie pockets, the student said he had a weapon," a news release stated, prompting the officer to draw his service weapon and instruct the student to lie on the ground.
