Resellers are already trying to capitalize on the success of Starbucks' "Bearista" cup.
Part of the coffeehouse chain's holiday merchandise line, the 20-ounce "cold cup" quickly skyrocketed in popularity and became a hot commodity in the hours since its launch on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Shaped like a teddy bear, the beverage container features a lid designed to resemble a green Starbucks stocking cap, and it includes a straw. It retailed for $29.95.
Fans on Starbucks' Instagram seemed excited about the new addition ahead of its release but excitement grew into frustration over the lack of available stock, which, according to Starbucks, "sold out fast."
Customers have flooded Starbucks' social media with comments, making their disappointment clear, as some either got up extra early or trekked to multiple locations in hopes of getting their hands on the cup.
"We understand many customers were excited about the Bearista cup and apologize for the disappointment this may have caused," Starbucks said in a statement. "We have more exciting merchandise coming this holiday season."
While the frenzy concerning the release of the "Bearista" cups has died down, attempts to capitalize on the moment have appeared in the form of third-party listings.
'Really disappointing:' Starbucks 'Bearista' cups land on eBay, Mercari
The holiday-themed beverage container and other similar-looking products have popped up on eBay and Mercari, to the dismay of some.
"This campaign has done nothing but fuel resale at absurd prices, feeding a market that shouldn’t even exist. It’s really disappointing, but I felt it was important to say it," one user wrote in Starbucks' comment section.
Original "Bearista" cups are currently listed for anywhere between $100 and $450 across both e-commerce platforms, while "Bearista" cup dupes, also available, are listed for upwards of $50.
Dozens of eBay listings reviewed by USA TODAY show that some consumers, either for reselling purposes or to procure the beverage container, have spent hundreds of dollars to purchase the cup.
As consumers continue to purchase from third-party resellers pending another release, others are taking matters into their own hands by "DIY-ing" the cups at home with bear-shaped honey containers.
"We have the bear cups at home - in case you didn’t know," Hasime Kukaj, a beauty content creator, wrote in the caption of her video tutorial on Instagram.
Are Starbucks 'Bearista' cups sold out?
Yes. Starbucks confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY that its "Bearista" cups have sold out.
"The excitement for our merchandise exceeded even our biggest expectations and despite shipping more Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out fast,” the company said.
Starbucks declined to offer any additional information, specifically about whether and when the cups would be restocked.
