NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Amid SNAP benefit uncertainties, a pop-up food pantry emerged in New Haven on Friday, and more are expected to follow.
More than 30 volunteers packed bags of food in support of local people and families struggling amid the ongoing delay in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits funding.
Volunteers packed 450 bags of groceries to distribute to SNAP benefit recipients during their time of need.
SNAP is a federal program that offers food assistance to low-income households across the country. It helps eligible people and families buy groceries and is perhaps the nation's most prominent anti-hunger program.
However, as a result of the historically-long government shutdown, SNAP funding was paused beginning last Saturday, Nov. 1.
