Westfield set the tone for its game against Phillipsburg early on Friday afternoon, and the momentum propelled the Blue Devils back to the NJSIAA North 2, Group 4 Tournament semifinals.
Second-seeded Westfield advanced to the sectional semifinals for the sixth time in seven years with a 4-0 victory over 11th-seeded Phillipsburg.
It was the second-straight win for the Blue Devils, which defeated 14th-seeded Newark East Side 2-1 in the first round. They will face seventh-seeded Ridge in the semifinals on Tuesday after the Red Devils upset second-seeded Barringer 4-3.
“We knew we had to come out strong, have effort and have energy,” Westfield’s Jakub Kotowicz said. “I feel like we played pretty well, kept the ball well. The offense did really well keeping the ball up high.”
