GRAND FORKS — UND's Mikayla Aumer splashed a 3-point shot with 7 minutes, 47 seconds to go in the third quarter, igniting the crowd at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The senior guard's triple gave the Fighting Hawks a 40-27 lead over Youngstown State, their largest of the night, in Friday night's home opener.
UND had led for almost the entire first half despite shooting 2-for-17 from beyond the arc, locking up defensively and scoring with efficiency in the post.
But the Penguins finally found their footing after Aumer's triple. The visitors embarked on a 16-0 run that included four straight 3-pointers to take the lead, and finished strong in the fourth quarter for a 65-58 win over the Hawks.
