BECKLEY – Riel Figueroa blasted his first couple of shots on Saturday afternoon so high and so hard, they would’ve been better suited as football field goals.
The Bridgeport junior striker’s next two efforts had the perfect touch, giving the Indians the perfect finish.
Figueroa’s goal in the 56th minute broke a tie with Nitro in the WVSSAC Class AAA boys soccer state tournament championship game. He added another in the 77th to lock up Bridgeport’s 3-1 victory over the Wildcats at Carter Family Foundation Stadium.
The Indians (21-1-2) thus made their first-ever trip to the final a victorious one and denied Nitro (21-1-2) an undefeated season.
“It’s really special,” Figueroa said. “It's definitely gonna be down in the memory book. We’re not gonna forget about this moment.”
