SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) - In light of the 50th anniversary of the shipwreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Monday, community members of Superior gathered to unveil a historical marker on the day the ship set sail 50 years ago.
On November 9th, 1975, the ship left the Burlington Northern Railroad Dock in Superior, Wisconsin, but didn’t make its return home.
On that same day, 50 years later, the Superior community gathered to honor the lives lost with a new memorial that sits on the Lake’s shore.
“This is for them,” said Friends of the Fitz member Teddie Meronek. “It’s about time we honored their memories. We didn’t do it before in Superior, but we’re doing it now.”
