WESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Since 2015, the Friends of Auxiliary has been taking care of the three Weston State Hospital cemeteries, and on Monday, they held their 10th annual veterans tribute.
For the first time ever, a flag was raised at Cemetery One in honor of Veterans Day. Although only one headstone still stands at that location, hundreds of veterans are buried on the hundreds of acres that the cemeteries cover.
The honoring also included laying a wreath, a gun salute and volunteers set poppies across the cemetery for the veterans not named there.
Krista Adkins, the volunteer coordinator at Sharpe Hospital, spoke with 12 News about honoring the veterans and former patients of the hospital.
“It's very important to keep their stories alive. Behind every patient, it was a person,” Adkins
