After an intense solar storm Tuesday night, we may be treated again Wednesday.
The sun has been busy the last year and a half! Last May 10–13, 2024, saw the strongest solar storm since 1989, when the KP index reached a whopping 9 and auroras were visible practically all over North America. Tuesday evening’s display was nearly as intense, with a peak KP index of 8.67.
The aurora oval was so intense that it was visible as far south as El Salvador — at least on cameras! That’s just 13 degrees latitude!
To get visibility that far and wide requires a super-energetic solar storm — and we got it. A G4 (out of 5) geomagnetic storm was reached Tuesday night. It’s probably the second biggest since 1989, behind last May’s (2024).
