SAC CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Wednesday, the Sac County Board of Supervisors and the county sheriff talked about the future of the county jail after a $12.5 million bond to build a new jail failed in last week’s election.

The county jail, which was built in 1939, “poses serious safety risks to staff and the community,” according to the Sac County Attorney.

“We have the oldest jail in the state of Iowa, which is concerning,” said Mike Fischer, the district 2 supervisor on the Sac County board of supervisors.

The Sac County Jail falls short of several Iowa code requirements.

“Some of the biggest things we need are the ability to be hands off, having remote locks and unlocks, also being able to separate inmates,” said Sac County Sheriff Katie Stange. “Right now, we have very few options to sepa
