RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -A 34-year-old man accused of killing a Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza volunteer appeared in court for the first time on November 12, 2025, in Sparks Justice Court.

Michael Paulson is accused of attacking Michael Hess on November 3, 2025, at the memorial in Sparks.

Prosecutors say Paulson attacked Hess from behind then hit him over the head several times with a rock.

Paulson died at Renown Medical Center on November 6, 2025.

Paulson faces murder with a deadly weapon charge as well as murder of someone 60-years or older.

In court today, his attorney asked Paulson receive a competency evaluation.

Justice of the Peace Chris Wilson agreed, which means no bail hearing or arraignment will take place until it’s determined Paulson understands what is happening in court and
