ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to end the longest shutdown in government history, but not before it had its effect on U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs and its employees.
“It’s been extremely stressful, chaotic. These shutdowns create a lot of anxiety for a lot of my constituents,” said Antonio Gaines, the Local 222 Union President representing HUD employees.
The HUD Union President said that during the shutdown, community development block grants were paused, loans for affordable housing were stalled and several Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity employees were RIF’d or terminated.
Gaines said eliminating such employees undermines their ability to reinforce fair housing laws. He also said they are not aware
