Christopher Watts was deeply unhappy with me.

The budding jailhouse lawyer parked himself in the library at the Jamieson Community Correctional Institute in a Halifax industrial park and put grievance to paper.

Watts, now 64, insisted he was not a rapist because in Canada, rape is no longer listed in the Criminal Code. Now, it’s sexual assault.

But if I took a survey of 100 random people on a Friday night at some of my favourite watering holes (hello, McVeigh’s), the answer would be the same: What do you call a grown man forcibly having sex with a 13-year-old girl?

That’s a rapist, 100% of the time, the survey sample would say. And he’s also a convicted killer, or as Canada’s woke bureaucrats might now call him, a person-slaughterer or an unaliver.
